Burma Trek
This unique trek takes you to the Burmese Himalaya - a unique area of snow-capped mountains and stunning scenery; a place that very few traveller have set foot in. We travel from subtropical forests to temperate rainforests and then alpine meadows. This unspoilt Himalayan environment is also home to several unique species of wildlife and plant life, many of them rare and endangered.
Starting in Rangoon (Yangon) we fly north to the township of Putao, which lies under the shadows of Mount Madwe (4500 metres) and Mount Slimatdin (4800 metres) and is the gateway to the mountain region. On our 10-day trek, we meet Kachin, Lisu and Rawan people, as we walk past remote villages under the shadows of many snow-capped mountains. A highlight of our trek is a climb to the summit of Mount Phongun or Phongun Razi (3500 metres), when we may be able to see India towards the west. On our return to Rangoon, we visit the famous Shwedagon Pagoda.

DAILY ITINERARY
Day 1: Rangoon (Yangon)
Upon arrival in Rangoon (Yangon), you are met and transferred to our centrally located hotel. You meet your tour leader and the rest of the group. After a pre-trip briefing, we adjourn for a group dinner in the city (cost not included).
Day 2: Putao
Early morning transfer to airport for our Putao bound flight (the whole journey will take approximately five hours). Upon arrival at Putao Airport, we are met and transferred to our local guesthouse. After lunch at a local restaurant, we enjoy an afternoon walk for two hours, past paddy fields, to the Majaw Lisu village, situated west of Putao. This village is quite scenic, with a snow-covered Mount Slimatdin looming in the horizon. Our return walk is also interesting, as we pass livestock and fishermen, and local women can be seem walking along with carrying firewood on their heads. The evening is spent enjoying dinner at another local restaurant and preparing for our trek the next day.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 3: Upper Shangaung - Wasandum
After breakfast, we depart by jeep (or truck) to Upper Shangaung (16 km - approx. 1 hour). This village is home to both Lisu and Rawan tribes and it is here that we start our trek. We walk around the peak of Mount Shangaung (1460 metres), by the shoulder of Mount Slimatdin (1834 metres) to our final destination, Wasandum village. Today's trek is quite a testing one, as we ascend to 1400 metres before descending back to 914 metres. We walk for six hours and cover a total distance of 19 kilometres. Wasandum is a small Rawan village situated by Namro Creek. We stay overnight in local village homestay.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 4: Wasandum - Awadum - Kalang - Ziyadum
After breakfast, we cross Namro Creek by a makeshift bridge and continue trekking to Awadum village (6.4 km - approx. 2 hours). Today's trek will be much easier compared to yesterday's, as it is on much flatter terrain. Awadum village is mainly inhabited by Lisu tribes and is separated into two by a large paddy field. After a short rest we continue our walk to Kalang (Rawan tribe), after crossing a suspension bridge that spans Ziya Creek (6.4 km - approx. 2 hours). On a sunny day, we will get a clear view of Mount Phonyin (Phonyin Razi). After lunch we trek through lush and green forests and again cross the Ziya River by suspension bridge to get to our final destination, Ziyadum (5.6 km - approx. 1.5 hours). Home to Rawan people, Ziyadum is the most remote frontier village in the northwestern direction. It is possible to go down to Ziya Creek for a wash. Again we are surrounded by stunning scenery complete with snow-capped mountains, such as Mount Ziya and Mount Phangran. Our night is spent in another village homestay.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 5: Ziyadum - Chaungzone - Lower Thitpingyi Camp
We leave the last trace of human civilisation and trek towards Chaungzone (8 km - approx. 3 hours). We will have to put on protective waterproof pants to prevent leeches from biting, as this sector is quite notorious that happening! We hike along Phangran Creek in deep evergreen forest, with slight ups and downs. After lunch, we cross a suspension bridge over the creek and continue trekking on a mule track (steep uphill walk) until we get to lower Thitpingyi camp (4.8 km - approx. 2 hours), which is situated 1760 metres above sea level. Tonight is also our first night of camping.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 6: Lower Thitpingyi Camp - Hkan Taut Myit Camp
After breakfast we continue trekking up the mountain to Hkan Taut Myit camp (8 km - approx. 6 hours). The mule track will end after a few kilometres, then we have to hike through steep undulating terrain along the narrow shoulder of the Phongun mountain range. Nevertheless today's trekking route is fascinating, as we pass through a variety of forests and also bird life. We will see bamboo shrinking to cane, rhododendron flowers and trees with thick moss on them. Hkan Taut Myit is situated about 2590 metres above sea and is a most beautiful spot for overnight camp.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 7: Hkan Taut Myit Snowline Camp
Today we start with a relaxing morning, as we take in our beautiful surroundings. In the late morning we start trekking to the snowline - mostly uphill and occasionally down (6.4 km -approx. 3-4 hours, depending on camping conditions). The trekking here is harder as we walk in narrow lines, however, the scenery remains impressive. We have an option of three different campsites, all on the snow line, and where we choose will depend on weather conditions. Be prepared for a cold night, as temperatures could well drop below zero.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 8: Mount Phongun - Hkan Taut Myit Snowline Camp
After breakfast we trek to the summit of Mount Phongun (3500 metres). The walking distance is just over 4 kilometres, but depending on conditions, it could take anything between 3-7 hours to get to the summit. The time we spend on the summit will also depend on weather conditions. If the weather is clear, it is possible to experience spectacular views all round and maybe see as far as the lands of India to the west. At the end of the day, we return to our camp at Hkan Taut Myit.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 9: Hkan Taut Myit Snowline Camp - Lower Thitpingyi Camp
After another morning relaxing and admiring the fantastic view of the mountains, we have an early lunch and trek back to Lower Thitpingyi camp. The first part of the walk takes us back on the series of ups and downs, with constantly changing topography, flora and fauna. We then reach the mule track and continue downhill back to Lower Thitpingyi camp.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 10: Lower Thitpingyi Camp - Chaungzone - Ziyadum
We continue back to Ziyadum, passing Chaungzone on the way. The first part of our walk is a fairly easy downhill one on the mule trek, but once we cross Phangran Creek on the suspension bridge, we get back into the dense evergreen forest and the walk winds along the creek with a series of ups and downs. We return to Ziyadum, where there is a chance to go down to Ziya Creek to freshen up. Our camping nights are over and we are back tonight sleeping in a local homestay.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 11: Ziyadum - Wasundum
We have a last chance to take in the views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains from Ziyadum village. After a late breakfast we continue our trek back to Wasundum, where we spend another night in a local village homestay.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 12: Wasundum - Shangaung - Putao
Having left the wilderness behind and returning to the clutches of human civilisation, we hike uphill to the plateau of Mount Shangaung, before continuing rapidly downhill to Shangaung village. We can also note with sadness at the development in the area, as a paved road is being built that will eventually link Putao with Ziyadum. Our jeeps meet us at Shangaung and takes us back to Putao (approx. 1 hour). In spite of the rough gravel road, this ride will feel like most luxury after having trekked for most of the past week. After checking in back at our guesthouse and freshening up, we go out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant with our fellow group members, including our porters, and commemorate the experience that we've shared for the past ten days, in this unique part of the world.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 dinner
Day 13: Rangoon (Yangon)
We transfer to Putao Airport for the flight back to Rangoon in the morning. In the afternoon we enjoy a city tour that acquaints us with the major sights of the capital. Shwedagon Pagoda dominates the skyline and the ubiquitous Karaweik Hall sits on the Royal Lake. There is also time explore the fascinating downtown street, which are full of dilapidated colonial edifices.
Meals included: 1 breakfast
Day 14: Rangoon (Yangon)
The tour ends after breakfast. A transfer to the airport is not included; however your tour leader will be on hand to advise you as to the options available.
Meals included: 1 breakfast
